News Roundtable Panel #166
TWiST #166 News Roundtable Friday
Google+ is heating up, while Cisco is cooling down. Zynga has amended their IPO, while Zillow files for theirs. Which is all to say that tech news abounds once again in this addition of a Friday TWiST News Roundtable with guests David Young of Joyent and Marhsall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb. Watch and learn, friends!
3:00-5:00 Thank you to MailChimp for sponsoring the show. Show our sponsor some love: everyone say "thank you @mailchimp" on Twitter.
5:00-6:30 Welcome to Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb and David Young of Joyent.
6:30-8:30 The National Sheriffs' Association says it will support the enforcement of a law mandating ISPs to store logs about their customers for 18 months. Do you think this legislation is inevitable?
8:30-9:15 David, what do you think?
9:15-10:30 You can’t even get a hotel room without a passport or a driver’s license these days.
10:30-11:15 There’s 3 million people in the country. How many of them are trafficking child pornography?
11:15-12:15 Is it France that has a “six strikes” law for ISPs?
12:15-13:30 Twitter is poised to close a split $800M round that will value the company at around $8B. If you held some of this early Twitter stock, would you hold on or cash out now?
13:30-14:30 Marshall, are you selling or holding on to your Twitter shares?
14:30-16:00 David says he would sell 100% of his Twitter stock.
16:00-17:30 Jason predicts Apple will buy Twitter.
17:30-18:30 Marshall, how much traffic is Google+ driving to ReadWriteWeb?
18:30-20:00 Does this mean the end for Quora?
20:00-21:30 We’re seeing a ton of traction for Google+ threads.
21:30-22:30 Google says that its Google+ social network is only for individual users, not companies or brands. (See more in the recent LAUNCH post: Google Suspends LAUNCH Google+ Account -- But Not Profiles of Other Media Properties)
22:30-24:30 Marshall, what did you and the RWW team decide to do?
24:30-28:45 David are you using this for Joyent or any of the other social sites?
28:45-30:00 Would RWW syndicate content from Google+?
30:00-32:00 Thank you to Carbonite for sponsoring the show. Go to Carbonite.com and use the offer code ‘TWiST’ for two bonus months free with your subscription.
32:00-33:45 Tuesday saw the release of a significant amendment to Zynga's IPO filing. They disclosed that nearly all of their revenue comes in from Facebook and that they (FB) holds exclusive rights to games including "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars." How significant is this going to be for the future of Zynga?
33:45-36:30 David: I’m anti-Zynga, pro-Rovio.
36:30-39:00 Could games be more popular than pornography on the Web now? What are people spending the most amount of time on online?
39:00-40:30 Jason: The networked city phenomenon and the healthcare advances are the ones most interesting to me.
40:30-44:00 David: A 5 series BMW has a processor in it and we’re having conversations that basically make the car a moving data center.
44:00-46:00 The new Mac OSx Lion debuted in the App Store on Wednesday, bringing with it over 250 new features. Is there anything new worth mentioning about this release?
46:00-48:00 Zillow shares opened at $60 per on Wednesday, 200% above its price, only to close at $35.77. Does this bode well for other small tech companies? Marshall, what do you think?
48:00-49:00 People in California always inflate their home values in Zillow. But their most interesting feature is “Make Me Move.” You can register your home at a price you would move out of it for and then see if anyone bites.
49:00-50:00 Jason: Redfin is infuriating people here in LA.
50:00-52:15 There’s been more talk this week about Apple buying companies, including streaming site Hulu. What’s Apple’s angle here?
52:15-55:00 This would be a way for Apple to make nice and cement some relationships. Let’s say it’s a $5B deal--they’ve instantly made nice with all of the studios and maybe Netflix is in trouble.
55:00-56:00 Tesla Motors has inked a $100M deal with Toyota to make an electric RAV4 SUV. How crucial was this deal for Tesla’s future?
56:00-59:30 David, what do you think?
59:30-1:01:00 To think that in our lifetime you could walk around a major city and not hear the noise or see the pollution if we all adopt electric cars, that’s amazing.
1:01:00-1:02:15 Lightning round: Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has been given a grant to ‘reinvent the toilet.’
1:02:15-1:07:00 Adobe acquired electronic signature company EchoSign last week, then EchoSign competitor RPost immediately filed suit against both Adobe and EchoSign, alleging intellectual property law violations. Is there merit in the suit?
1:07:00-1:07:45 Cisco will cut 6,500 jobs by the end of the summer, the largest round of layoffs for any tech company this year. Within the tech industry, overall layoffs have fallen 60% from the first half of 2010. Does this have larger implications or do they just need to scale down.
1:07:45-1:11:30 David, you work with them, what’s your take?
1:11:30-1:12:00 David, thank you so much. You can follow David on Twitter @davidpaulyoung.
1:12:00-1:13:00 Marshall, thank you as well. Everyone check out ReadWriteWeb.com and follow Marshall on Twitter @marshallk.
1:14:00-1:14:30 Thanks everyone, see you next time.
