Path co-founder and CEO Dave Morin joined TWiST in San Francisco for a candid discussion about his talk-of-the-town startup. Path may not be new, but the 2.0 is getting such rave reviews that we had to sit down and find out what went right.
0:00-1:00 One of my favorite founders, Path’s Dave Morin, is with us today.
1:00-1:45 We are in San Francisco today doing some shows out of the offices of CBS Interactive/CNET. Thank you to all of our friends there for lending us the space.
1:45-2:30 Path 2.0 is one of the best products ever released for mobile platforms.
2:30-3:45 Thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring the show. Everyone head to http://squarespace.com/TWiST and use the code ‘TWiST12’ to receive 20% off for six months.
3:45-4:45 How would you describe the reception that Path 1.0 got?
7:15-9:00 Did you over-think the app? Was that the mistake?
9:00-11:00 There was a lot of expectation because you built some key features at Facebook. What were some of those features?
11:00-11:45 Tyler: But the other key piece is that connect empowers Facebook’s social graph.
15:00-18:30 Fast forward to the “midlife crisis” of Path, during which the users start to dwindle. What was that like?
18:30-20:00 Is that because of the difference in programming languages or the app store rejecting things? Why does iterating take so long?
20:00-21:30 Wasn’t Facebook considered quaint in the beginning?
21:30-23:30 I had a magical experience with Path and I think that people who embrace it the most have kids. Shervin is also a power user and I would see pictures of his kids, and it was something that really connected us.
23:30-26:00 Isn’t that an experience people had in the early days of Facebook? What went wrong?
31:30-34:15 Thank you to GoToMeeting for sponsoring the show. Use the promo code ‘START’ for a free 30-day trial.
34:15-35:30 On Nov. 29, you launched Path 2.0 and I woke up to all these invitations and it was gorgeous.
35:30-36:30 A run down of some of the new features: When you hit plus to share, the circles expand in a spiral fashion. You can tell it if you’re awake or asleep (and the moon is in the correct phase.
36:30-39:30 You’re the Steven Spielberg of product design. How long did it take to build this?
39:30-40:45 Dave: People are telling me that it’s the best journal that they’ve ever had.
42:00-43:15 Dave explains the inspiration behind the sleep feature.
43:15-45:45 What do you think of apps like RunKeeper and Withings?
45:45-46:15 Dave: We’re working on a platform to support giving real and virtual goods.
48:15-51:15 Dave explains the Automatic feature in Path 2.0.
51:15-52:30 Is the location sharing defaulted to “on”? It seemed that way.
52:30-54:00 But it wouldn’t bother me at all even if it did default to on, because I trust your team. Unlike Facebook.
54:00-55:00 Does Zuckerberg have a vision of the future that’s different from the rest of us?
55:00-57:45 Do you think some of your efforts at Path are a reaction to what Facebook became or is that reading too much into it?
59:00-1:00:30 So there are no hard feelings for you leaving Facebook?
1:00:30-1:04:30 What do founders need to keep in mind when they start their journey?
1:06:30-1:08:30 Was this a final effort to revive the company?
1:13:00-1:13:15 Dave, thank you for your honesty and I wish you continued success.
1:13:15-1:14:15 Thank you to Squarespace and GoToMeeting. Please check them out and thank them @squarespace and @gotomeeting.
