Monday, March 16, 2009 at 06:40PM Welcome to "This Week in Startups"
Yes, I'm coming back to podcasting. I've learned a lot about what you guys want from me and it seems to be advice on the startup life. My email newsletter has been booming (13,000 subscribers), and my appearences on This Week in Tech and the Gillmor Gang are getting a huge response (some of it good in fact--rim shot!).
Seriously, I love talking to you guys about startups. Sharing war stories, giving each other practical tips and just rapping out about the latest news. I've spoken with my good friend Leo Laporte about using the name "This Week in Startups" (or "TWiSt" as he called it) and he was so magnaemous about: telling me he doesn't own the "This Week..." brand and that he would support me in any way.
What a guy.
Here is where we are at:
1. We have a studio built at Mahalo.
2. We have an amazing Tricaster to do a LIVE show with three cameras, lower thirds and live computer screens (including Skype/iChat interviews!).
3. We are looking for a partner to sponsor the show (like $1,000 a week to cover an editor/producer) and to provide bandwidth. We're talking to uStream, BitGravity and StickAm. I'm sure one of them will bite for a 40 week run.
4. I think I need a co-host or at least someone to read the news.
5. We need a format.
What should the format of a 60 minute show be in your mind?
Who should we get to partner with us on the show?

Hi Jason,
looking forward to your first Videopodcasting appearance. Looks pretty amazing, especially comparing the costs for the setup as mentioned in your email. More or less everybody with a bit of money can start a proper Videopodcast.
Regarding the format: 60 minutes is my personal maximum, you mentioned Leo and I m listening to his net@night podcast with Amber and sometimes the 70 minutes are hard to follow. If there is a menu or time tags, to which I can switch to, more than 60 minutes could be okay. But short, straight to the point and rememberable is better than 60 minutes of non-sense talking with a lot of commercials at the beginning or at the end. Speaking of commercials one thing that tremendously annoys me on TV are in between commercials, Meaning, if commercials than at the beginning or at the end or as product placements always during the video and make the ad phase at the beginning not too long.
In general I like the idea of a weekly startup podcast a lot, especially as I am a young guy, who is dreaming of his own company for almost a year now. But still needs some push to move his ass.
Looking forward to your next steps.
