Interesting podcast. I appreciate hearing a hardware story.
I was surprised there was no mention of either EMusic or LaLa - two services I go to first for purchase and discovery.
EMusic has a mp3-of-the-month model. The catalog is rich for indie snobs, jazz geeks and folkies and cost per track is way less than Amazon or Apple. Downloads have been DRM-free since day one in 1998.
LaLa has locker-in-the-cloud plus free-but-limited on-demand streaming plus one button download purchase. Price ratio for MP3 vs. unlimited cloud play is 10 to 1. But it is the UI that sold me. Bleeping perfect - it feels like a device. Nobody else has this right. You can browse anything without disturbing player, playback or queue. Also FB & twitter tie-in.
I'm not an insider with either of these, just a techie who loves music.
