This Week in Startups #12 with Brad and John from Ustream

College vs. Experience question.   Assumption "you will learn more on the job than in school."  Totally agree.  Nobody who knows anything will argue that.

However, I didn't hear what the caller had for idea or vision.   He sounded like he wanted an excuse to not continue with school.   There are people in life who move in a direction until they hit an obstacle, instead of finding away around it and continuing on their path, they change their path.

Simply put, all four behavior types exist in the workforce:

1:      College educated people who think too highly of themselves
2:      College educated people who rock
3:      People who dropped out who are brilliant
4:      People who dropped out who find excuses

But,  the self confidence of people who don't finish school is horrific.
Often they have a mindset that people who graduated college 'know something that they don't.'  They go through life thinking that there's a party out there and their not invited to it.  Napoleon complex, short man's disease, whatever...  ...it's an insecurity thing and is no fun to deal with.

When looking at new hires for our company, college education is the filter.    The amount of resumes that come in is overwhelming, they have to be quickly sorted into a yes, no and maybe pile.   Non college grads often come in defensive and argue why the didn't finish college.   It's not a good starting point.
